Big Brown, who currently stands at stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky ("Big Brown" 1), was an almost Triple Crown winner in 2008. He won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He placed 9th in the Belmont Stakes ("Big Brown” 2), most likely due to the quarter crack in his left front hoof. The crack was “held together by stainless steel sutures” (Harris, 2008). Even though the crack was described as minor compared to many other of his reoccurring hoof problems, he performed very poorly in the Belmont. After injuring his front right foot by tearing off part of his heel bulb (Drape, 2008), he was retired.
